Dear Somatosphere readers,
Next week I will be posting a daily description of my experiences at Neuroschool 2010 at the University of Wuerzberg in Germany.
This year lectures and laboratory practicals will be hosted in the Department of Psychiatry at the Univesity of Wuerzburg headed by European Neuroscience Network member Dr. Klaus-Peter Lesch.Dr. Lesch has done groundbreaking work in behavioral genetics on gene-environment interactions between a seratonin transporter (5-HTT), early experiences of trauma and symptoms of anxiety and depression. For example, see: http://www.pasteur.fr/applications/euroconf/depression/lesch.pdf.
Other faculty members include Nikolas Rose, who has recently written The Politics of Life Itself: Biomedicine, Power and Subjectivity in the 21st Century (2006), and Giovanni Frazzetto whose recent publications include:
Frazzetto, Giovanni (2009) Genetics of behaviour and psychiatric disorders: from the laboratory to society and back. Current science, 97 (11). pp. 1555-1563. ISSN 0011-3891
Frazzetto, Giovanni and Anker, Suzanne (2009) Science and society neuroculture.Nature reviews: neuroscience, 10 (11). pp. 815-821. ISSN 1471-0048
Thanks to the European Neuroscience Network, A.B.D. and postdoctoral (but non-faculty) scholars will be gathering there to discuss potential transdisciplinary collaborations between neursocientists, geneticists, psychiatrists, and social scientists to address issues surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
For example, we are being asked to consider questions such as:
- What is the role of ‘context’ and ‘culture’ in diagnosis, and how do they influence diagnosis and epidemiological data?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of biomarkers?
- What measurements are best suited to reflect heterogeneity in disease manifestation both at the biological and phenomenological level?
- Can and should we use narratives in illustrating the differences in severity, context and sequence of symptoms?
Please stay tuned!
Best,
neely

Sounds great! Looking forward to reading about the neuroschool, Neely!
I'm jealous, this sounds really great and also a good learning experience…
May want to look at the DSM V website, they have some interesting press releases, at this link you can find a release talking about the impact of gender, ethnicity and culture on mental illness.
