Wecome to the redesigned Somatosphere!

We’re very pleased to launch the fully redesigned version of Somatosphere today.  As you’ll quickly see, the site has not only a new look, but also a number of new features to help you read, archive, cite and comment on posts.

Maarten Ottens of mmott visual has done a truly outstanding job of designing an uncluttered site which foregrounds the writing, even as it allows for numerous forms of interaction with readers.

You’ll notice a number of changes to how the site is organized.  All posts are now placed into one (or more) of seven categories — icons for which are on the right-hand sidebar:

  • Announcements (calls for papers, conference announcements, jobs)
  •  Books (reviews, book announcements, author interviews)
  •  Features (everything that doesn’t fit into other categories: research reports, conference reports, general thoughts, interviews, etc.)
  •  In the journals (the monthly roundup, but also posts about special issues and specific articles)
  •  Lectures (links to or embeds of videos or podcasts of talks)
  •  Teaching resources (syllabi, discussion of teaching issues, bibliographies, etc.)
  •  Web Roundups (the monthly roundup, but also various findings around the web that are not in academic journals or books)

One important difference with the new site is you now have to click on individual posts to read them in their entirety – you can’t read the posts from the front page. One advantage is that this has allowed for a number of useful features to be added to each post. Each post now has floating buttons that allow readers to share it through email or social networking, to print or to convert the post into a pdf.  At the foot of each post you will now find a box recommending “Similar posts” from the archive and an expandable list of academic citations for the post – in five common bibliographic formats.

Of course all of these design elements and tools are only useful insofar as they help us engage in the conversation, debate, research, teaching, clinical work and intervention that has drawn us to this site in the first place.  We hope that you will find the posts (both past and future) on Somatosphere useful and engaging. If you are interested in writing for the site or getting involved in some other capacity, please take a look at our Submissions & Feedback page and get in touch with us at admin AT somatosphere DOT net.

So once again, welcome to the new site.  Have a look around!
